A Kidney Research Centre to be Built in Ruiru, Kiambu County

Kiambu County Governor H.E William Kabogo has signed up for the training of local Doctors and Nephrologists in Germany and Britain. This is in line with the county's plan to improve the renal department in Kiambu hospitals as the county gears towards the launch of its kidney centre.

In an intense meeting discussion with Mr. Christopher Boeffel, Vice President of B BRAUN and his team in Melsungen, Germany, Governor Kabogo looked forward to fulfill his pledge to set up a centre of excellence in Kiambu County.

“It’s our sincere wish to have kidney centre become reality in Ruiru and hopefully our first ever kidney transplantation by our own Kiambu doctors who are in training abroad performing this operation. That is our goal,” he said.

Kiambu County has one renal unit at Thika Level Five hospital which saves hundreds of patients the struggle of going to Nairobi in search of treatment.

“Though plans are underway to increase the 5 bed capacity to 10, there is a need for more doctors and nephrologists,” added Governor Kabogo.

He led a delegation which included his County Executive Member for Health Dr Jonah Mwangi and his technical team to visit the Executive Vice President of Rommelag Group, Mr. Ralf Bouffkeur in Stuttgart, Germany (Rommelag Group are the sole specialists in the blow and fill technology used to pack fluids and electrolytes under sterile conditions)

Governor Kabogo has also held high level meetings with fluids production companies for a possible set up of a local base for production of liquids and electrolytes for Kiambu hospitals. He noted that Kiambu county health department spends sizeable resources on buying fluids and electrolytes that can be manufactured locally. To save on the cost, the department is exploring the possibility of setting up a plant that can produce and package commonly used fluids and electrolytes.
